October 2-30, 2019
Arts Night Out Reception: Friday, October 11, 5-8 pm

Poetry Reading and Reception: Saturday, October 12, 2 pm

The Northampton Arts Council is proud to announce the 2019 Northampton Biennial.
This is the third Northampton Biennial to include both poetry and visual arts.

Our opening celebration for visual art will take place in conjunction with Arts Night Out, at the Hosmer Gallery at Forbes Library on Friday, October 11th, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Our poetry reading and reception will take place on Saturday, October 12th at 2:00pm in the Calvin Coolidge Room at Forbes Library. These events are free and open to the public.

For the 2019 Biennial, the Northampton Arts Council asked artists and writers who live and work in Western Massachusetts to submit work that interprets the theme “from seed to fruition” in a literal form or as a work/body of work that has been fully developed and most closely represents the artist’s personal artistic vision.

The visual art for the Biennial Exhibition was selected by three jurors: Donna Gates, Gallery Director and Curator, Salmon Falls Gallery; Jameson Johnson, Founder and Editor in chief, The Boston Art Review; Robert Wiesenburger, the Associate Curator of Contemporary Projects for The Clark art Institute. The jurors selected work in a wide variety of styles and media from, including painting, printmaking, book arts, photography, video, and sculpture. Their selections reflect their shared interest in experimentation, innovative use of materials, and an open-ended approach to narrative.

Poetry jurors include Nellie Prior, Co organizer of Departure Reading series; Karen Skolfield, current poet laureate of Northampton and professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Catherine Weiss, Organizer of Northampton Poetry.
